Motility of bacteria in sediments
نویسنده
چکیده
Motility and chemotactic responses to dissolved organic matter of bacteria living within different types of sediments were investigated down to 35 cm beneath the sediment surface. At least 20% of bacteria swim, although they often attach temporarily to solid surfaces, and they respond to point sources of organic matter. Altogether their motile behaviour and their relative densities are very similar to what has previously been found for planktonic bacteria. Bacterial motility in sand and silt is about half that of motility in moving water.

Motility of Electric Cable Bacteria.
UNLABELLED Cable bacteria are filamentous bacteria that electrically couple sulfide oxidation and oxygen reduction at centimeter distances, and observations in sediment environments have suggested that they are motile. By time-lapse microscopy, we found that cable bacteria used gliding motility on surfaces with a highly variable speed of 0.5 ± 0.3 μm s(-1) (mean ± standard deviation) and time b...
متن کاملIsolation of anthracene resistant positive gram bacteria from Imam Khomeini Port oil polluted sediments
Today's most of microorganisms are used for purification of hazard waste such as municipal and industrial waste water and oil contaminants. In this study 2 bacterial species were isolated and purified in hydrocarbon (anthracene) containing media from oil polluted sediment of Imam Khomeini port. Bacillus pasteurii and Amphibacillus xylanus species were identified as indicator degrading bacteria ...
متن کاملThe effects of crude oil on marine microbial communities in sediments from the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea: A microcosm experiment
Changes in the microbial community in response to catastrophic oil spills in marine and fresh water environments have been well documented. Molecular methods provide tools for analyzing the entire bacterial community, covering also those bacteria that have not been cultured in the laboratory. In this study, four different microcosms were set up containing sediments collected from the Persian Gu...

متن کاملبررسی فعالیت ضد میکروبی فرآوردههای طبیعی گونههای باسیلوس جدا شده از رسوبات بستر دریای مازندران
Background and purpose: Research for discovery and development of new and effective antimicrobial agents has been raised due to increasing rate of numerous multi-drug resistant pathogens. Marine bacteria especially Bacillus species are a rich source of potentially versatile secondary metabolites with antimicrobial activities. In this study, sediments of the Caspian Sea were screened for natural...
